Rebound vs Regain

What is rebound?

For example, if your weight drops from 65kg to 55kg, and after finishing your diet you go back to eating normally but your weight goes back up to 60kg, 65kg, or even 70kg, and it feels like even drinking water makes you gain weight, that’s called rebound.

What is regain?

After dieting, you stop controlling your eating and start eating too much or binge eating, thinking “I’m already slim so I can eat whatever I want.” Your weight returns to 65kg, that’s called regain.

 

Why does rebound happen?

Overly strict dieting slows down your metabolism.

Extreme dieting can cause muscle loss and reduce your metabolic rate. The weight you lose may come more from muscle than fat. Once you return to eating normally, your body quickly stores energy as fat.

 

Only relying on exercise without controlling your diet.

Exercise counts for 30%, but diet counts for 70%! If you focus only on working out and ignore your eating habits, you might overeat after intense workouts, canceling out the effects of exercise. Also, suddenly increasing workout intensity is hard to maintain. Once you stop, even if you eat the same, it’s easy to rebound.

 

No proper transition period.

After reaching your goal weight, your body needs a transition period to stabilize. If you return to normal eating too quickly, your body might go into stress mode, absorb more, and cause fast weight gain.

 

Why does regain happen?

  1. Fat cells in overweight people are 3–5 times bigger than normal. Losing weight shrinks the size of fat cells, but the number doesn’t decrease.
  2. Fat cells have memory! Fat cells renew every 90–180 days. If you stay slim during this time and control your diet, your fat cells can remember their smaller size, making it harder to gain weight again.

 

How to prevent regain?

  • Eat balanced meals and control your calorie intake.
  • Keep a healthy daily routine. Learn to manage stress, because being too stressed can lead to emotional eating.
  • Weigh yourself weekly to catch any weight gain early.

 

How to avoid rebound?

Choose healthy and safe weight loss method. It helps reduce fat and shape your body at the same time, no rebound, safe and effective weight loss.
